What is TMJ Disorder and How Can Botox Injections Help to Relieve the Associated Symptoms

Botox at Rejuvenus Clinic.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located on either side of your face where the jawbone meets the skull. It is involved in many movements we do on a daily basis such as chewing, swallowing, and talking. In many cases, when this joint is overused it can be the cause of severe pain and tension headaches. The majority of people who suffer from TMJ disorders are not even aware of the action that is causing them pain. Teeth clenching and grinding are two actions, often done unconsciously, that can worsen the symptoms of TMJ disorders and leave you with a tension headache at the end of the day.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw

  • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints

  • Aching pain in and around your ear

  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing

  • Aching facial pain

  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth

TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew. But if there's no pain or limitation of movement associated with your jaw clicking, you probably don't need treatment for a TMJ disorder.

Botox Injecton Area for TMJ

Bulky muscle mass or “square” face are also common in people who clench and/or grind their teeth on a regular basis. Botulism protein can soften the bulky muscle mass of the face and, in many cases, help reshape the musculature of the jawline.

These injections can be a fast and effective treatment for patients with enlarged muscle mass on their jawline or for those patients suffering from TMJ disorders and tension headaches, thus improving their quality of life.
