Static wrinkles begin to show because essential components in the skin such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which provide the skin with structure and volume, decrease with aging. Neglected dynamic wrinkles left on their own eventually become static wrinkles.
The content of dermal collagen, the most important component, decreases by 1% per year after the age of 20. The collagen fibres also become thicker and more brittle with age, due to an increase in the cross linkage.
